Lemongrass, as the name suggests, is a tropical grass that has a lemon like fragrance. It is commonly found in India and Sri Lanka and is also popularly used in Asian cuisines. It is one of the most common ingredients of curry in Thai cuisine. Similarly, the lemongrass tea has also been savored as a cool as well as hot drink since a long time. However, along with its culinary uses, lemongrass has been used extensively for its health benefits.

Lemongrass Tea Benefits for Cancer

Some of the common benefits of lemongrass plant include its use in treating indigestion and enhancing immune system. It helps in maintaining a healthy skin and treating acne. At the same time, lemongrass is used for the treatment of blood pressure, arthritis, and rheumatic fever. It also has anti-bacterial and antifungal properties and is rich in antioxidants. However, according to recent studies, researchers and scientists have claimed that lemongrass actually helps in the treatment of cancer.

Scientists have claimed that lemongrass helps in destroying cancer cells in vitro. According to the studies, lemongrass tea promotes the cancer cells to kill themselves which indirectly helps in the prevention of cancer growth. This occurs due to the presence of a substance known as 'citral' in lemongrass. Secondly, the damaged cancer cells do not release any harmful substances, and hence, do not possess any threat to their surrounding environment. It has also been found that the amount of citral required for the same is very less, i.e., only one gram of citral helps in carrying out this function. Therefore, it is believed that having a cup of lemongrass tea not only helps in treating some forms of cancer but also helps in providing other health benefits. Here are two recipes for the same.

Lemongrass Tea Recipes

Recipe # 1

Ingredients
  • 12-15 fresh lemongrass stalks
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 8 cups water
Method of Preparation

Cut the lemongrass in small pieces and get rid of any dry and discolored stalks. Now place the cut lemongrass, sugar and 2 cups of water in a pan and bring to a boil. When the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture is boiled, remove from heat and steep for 15-20 minutes. Pour the remaining 6 cups of water in the pan and stir. Blend this mixture finely until the lemongrass is crushed completely. Strain through a fine mesh sieve and serve with ice.

Recipe # 2

Ingredients
  • 5-10 fresh lemongrass stalks
  • 1 cup of water
  • Sugar/milk optional
Method of Preparation

Cut the lemongrass stalks in fine slices. You can either put the lemongrass in a pan along with water and bring to boil or pour boiling water directly on the lemongrass in a cup. Let it steep for a couple of minutes. Your lemongrass tea is ready! You can also add sugar and milk according to your taste.

It is essential to use only fresh stalks for making this tea in order to achieve all its health benefits. It should be noted that there are chances of you hurting your hands while plucking lemongrass stalks and hence, you can consider wearing gloves while doing so. Secondly, although there are no proven side effects associated with lemongrass tea, in case you experience discomfort or side effects in any form, you should discontinue having it immediately. Lastly, those suffering from chronic illness should also consult the doctor before having lemongrass tea.

If you have decided to have it regularly, you should look for genuine products (leaves or stalks) to make it at home. Lastly, also note that although it has numerous health benefits, it should not be consumed in excess. Take care!

The 6 Health Benefits of Decaf Coffee

Decaf coffee offers many of the same health benefits as regular coffee without some of the potential side effects. Whereas the caffeine in regular coffee can lead to increased anxiety, caffeine dependence, sleeplessness and heart irregularities, decaf appears free of these symptoms. Here are 6 health benefits of decaf coffee:

Cancer Prevention
Decaffeinated coffee is associated with a lower risk of many types of cancer. Just three cups per day may reduce the risk of skin cancer by as much as 9% in men and 20% in women. The risk of developing prostate cancer is also greatly reduced, by as much as 30% for some coffee drinkers according a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Liver Protection
According to a professor at the Harvard School For Public Health, decaf coffee consumption appears to help protect the liver from cirrhosis and related forms of liver cancer. It is unclear as to whether the caffeine in regular coffee may enhance or deter this protection, but decaf coffee is considered good for the liver when taken in moderation.

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
Drinking decaf coffee can greatly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Coffee contains magnesium, chromium and other minerals that help the body use insulin. Thus, coffee helps regulate blood sugar levels. A review of 18 studies, involving 450,000 people, published in Archives of Internal Medicine, found that each additional cup of coffee consumed per day lowered the risk of diabetes by 7%. A similar study of 193,000 people saw a reduced risk of 35% for people drinking 6 or 7 cups of coffee per day.

There may be some difference between drinking regular or decaf coffee when it comes to preventing Alzheimer's. A lab study of mice found that an unknown substance in coffee interacted closely with the caffeine to boost GCSF, a growth factor known to ward off Alzheimer's disease. For now, it appears that all coffee can have positive effects on Alzheimer's and dementia, but decaf coffee may not be as strong as regular.

Parkinson's Disease
Consuming several cups of coffee per day could lower the risk of Parkinson's disease by 25%. Heart Health
Though decaf coffee has sometimes been associated with an increase in cholesterol levels, it appears that its overall heart benefits are good. One study showed that women who drink coffee on a daily basis have a 25% less chance of developing cardiovascular disease than non-coffee drinkers. Additionally, decaf may be a better choice for the heart than regular coffee because it does not come with the adverse side effects caffeine can have on cardiovascular health.

Soursop leaves, 4 to 5
Water, 1 cup
Milk (optional), ½ cup
Honey to taste

Directions

Pluck a few fresh leaves from the tree if you have one in your garden. Make sure the leaves are tender and not mature. Tender leaves give a better flavor and are also higher in flavonoids as compared to the mature ones. Wash the leaves thoroughly under running water to clear the dust and other residue that may be stuck to the leaves. Dry them with a paper towel and tear them into small pieces. Meanwhile, in a small-sized pot pour a cup of water to boil it. Place the shredded leaves in a cup and pour the boiling water in it. Cover the cup and let this infusion stand for about half an hour. This is the time taken for drawing the tea, and the longer it stands, the better flavor you will get. Once the tea has been concocted, you can add honey or sugar to taste.

Soursop included in any form, be it the fruit, juice or tea is productive in preventing as well as treating many maladies. However, this tea should be drunk in moderation, owing to some side effects it may have, on the health.
